Benue Gov., Samuel Ortom Reacts After Hoodlums Destroyed His Campaign Billboards In The State
The campaign billboards of the sitting governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom have been torn into shreds by faceless political thugs across some of the local government area of the state.
Ortom is one of the Senatorial Candidates jostling for February 25th National Assembly Election to represent his people at the Senate after the expiration of his eight years tenure as governor.
Notwithstanding his disagreement with Atiku Abubakar candidacy as member of G-5 Governors, Ortom is hoping to realize his Senatorial ambition under the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.
However, the destruction of his campaign billboards and posters by unknown thugs appears to have given an insight into why the governor must strive beyond regular campaign to clinch the senatorial seat in 2023.
According to Daily Post, the thugs suspected to have been sponsored by rival parties launched an attack on his campaign materials with several billboards pulled down.
Reacting to the development, the Governor, in a statement issued by his media aide, Terver Akase on Saturday, said the act is capable of triggering avoidable crises in the area.
He called for caution on the part of party supporters.
Ortom stressed that no individual or group has the right to pull down campaign materials of political opponents, no matter the circumstances.
The Governor stated that democracy guarantees the freedom of participation to everyone and no individual has the constitutional authority to intimidate or harass others.
He stated that the introduction of electronic voting has strengthened the country’s electoral system and anyone who is confident about his chances at the polls should canvass for votes among the people rather than resort attacking other contestants.
The G-5 Governor urged security operatives to investigate the incidents in Gboko and bring those responsible to justice, to serve as a deterrent to others.
