Lucky Escape As Stadium Floodlight Crashes During Morning Workout

Danger was averted on Wednesday morning when one of the giant floodlights situated at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos collapsed during workout hours.

RovingNaija reports that the decrepit structure, located close to the Ojez Restaurant is one of the surviving monuments in the abandoned national edifice built in 1972 by the military government of General Yakubu Gowon.

The incident occured in the morning at a few minutes to 11:00 just when the last set of fitness freaks were rounding off their training session for the morning.

According to an eye witness, the heavy wind and thunder claps that heralded the morning shower forced a few sports enthusiasts to seek refuge under the shelter of the main bowl while some drove out of the stadium.

“The next thing we heard was a thunderous sound that scared us and when we came out to see what had happened, we noticed that the massive structure which was standing just a few minutes ago had crashed.

“I just thank God that this did not happen on a very busy day like Saturday when a lot of people come out to train… Just imagine what could have happened,” she asked.
