UPDATE: Gov. Diri Gives Job, Scholarship To Family Of Man Stabbed To Death Because Of N50 In Bayelsa
Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri has provided some succour to the family of Douglas Joseph who was stabbed to death by a Tricycle rider over a disagreement about fifty naira Transport Fare in the state.
The governor visited the family on Saturday to commiserate with them over last Wednesday’s ugly incident that led to his death.
RovingNaija had earlier reported that the young Douglas, a native of Epie from Yenizue-Epie community in Yenagoa, the state capital, was stabbed by a commercial tricycle rider following disagreement over N50 transport fare.
Douglas’ death however triggered a protest by irate Youths who took laws into their hands by lynching the tricycle rider.
The governor, who led top government officials to the deceased’s family’s residence at the Kpansia area of the state capital, brought some succour to the family as he offered immediate employment in the state civil service to the wife of the now deceased Douglas.
He also announced scholarship for the deceased’s three children, saying the state government would sponsor their education up to university level.
The governor equally directed the Commissioner for Transport to immediately address the issue of hike in transport fares within Yenagoa and environs and report to him within one week.
Gov. Diri commiserated with the immediate family and the entire Epie community, describing the death of the promising young man as sad and unfortunate.
He noted that the state was peaceful and the people very hospitable to visitors and investors.
He said the government would therefore not condone the acts of those with evil agenda in the state.
Diri used the opportunity to commend the people of Yenezue-Epie for keeping the peace as he directed to at the meeting he had with them on Thursday, expressing satisfaction that the meeting yielded positive results.
While describing the circumstances that led to the young man’s death as an eye-opener, he restated his warning that security agents should arrest and prosecute anyone found with dangerous weapons.
Earlier, speaking on behalf of the deceased family, Mr. Daniel Oyimini, said although they were in pains, the visit of the governor lightened their burden. He described Governor Diri as a true father of the state.
Mr. Oyimini however appealed to the governor to intervene on behalf of the family so the police could release the body of their son for burial.
