The ‘oju-yobo’ portrait – By Israel Ojoko

When I saw that portrait, I was like, ‘wetin be dis?’

To be fair, though, I didn’t expect a portrait to be far in appearance from the original person, I mean you can’t give what you don’t have, but I expect a better picture.

I can imagine the amount of money that went into the production and selection of that one picture, how that particular one became the chosen one, is what my small head cannot imagine.

Haba! Baba should be finer than this na, or is it that my expectation is too high?

Look at the portrait again, I can’t even see his eyes very well, it is either they are literally closing or the glasses have taken the shine off those fascinating eyeballs. These people just want to steal Baba’s shine. Terrible people.

I quickly googled his portrait on the Internet, and many of them appeared with his handsomeness in full glare. I saw portraits where he is full of life, agile, and looks like the leader people can trust for the next four years.

I know he is older now, but come on, our leader deserves a better look than the frail appearance that was dished out to us. We also deserve a good, agile-looking leader who we can point at his picture at the airport, train station, office, or anywhere else and say this is my leader. We don’t want a picture that looks sick.

But I like that agbada. It’s white like snow, and it depicts the richness and abundance of Baba. I also like his traditional cap. We will officially see more of that now on the international stage and maybe on the street, worn by his admirers.

The cameraman that shot that picture, the person or team that selected that particular one, and the whole production team should go back to work and give us something much better for official use, since this one is for the inauguration, I will not say more than this.

This is 2023, Nigeria deserves a fine boy, a healthy, and charming leader. We know that Nigerians are going through serious hardship, no job or poor pay, collapsing health system, death-trap roads, terrible insecurity and an epileptic education system, but they try not to look like what they’re going through, and that is the kind of picture of a leader they would like to hang on the wall.

There are many apps that can help with a great outlook of pictures. These apps can even turn water into wine, turn black to white, and make a sad face into a smiling look. They can wash away your pimples and clear off those dark spots, and make Baba look 30 years younger. Just go to the Play Store and give us something befitting biko.

I am impatiently looking forward to seeing the befitting portrait of my leader in the coming weeks.
