The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has nabbed an Akwa Ibom- based man, Gabriel Ekpiri for selling his nine-year-old son for N400,000 (Four Hundred Thousand Naira).
The suspect, a jobless resident of Ekit Itam Akpan Obong in Itu Local Government Area of the state, confessed to the act and cited economic hardship as reason for his action.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Odiko Macdon on Tuesdsy, Gabriel Ekpiri was arrested by the patrol unit of the command.
The cops were on a normal patrol when they discovered the terrible deed and immediately intervened.
The PPRO said the Commissioner of Police, CP Olatoye Durosinmi has condemned the action, describing it as barbaric and unacceptable,
“The Commissioner of Police has condemned the action of one Gabriel Okon Ekpiri of Ekit Itam Akpan Obong in Itu Local Government Area who sold his nine-year-old son for N400,000.”
The development sent shockwaves across the town, leaving neighbors angry and disappointed by a parents’ behavior toward their own child.
The police have initiated an extensive investigation into the situation in order to determine every detail of the incident and ensure that all those involved face the full force of the law.
The rescued child has been handed over to the state child welfare officials while legal proceedings has commenced.
