Prof. Soyinka Lambasts Labour Party Leadership
By Orji Onyekwere
Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has taken a swipe at the leadership of Labour Party, LP, whom he said; knew very well that their presidential candidate, Peter Obi lost the February 25th 2023 presidential election, but are bent on forcing lies on Nigerians especially the youths.
Soyinka said this on Wednesday, while speaking at an event titled “The Lives of Wole Soyinka — A Dialogue” organized by Africa in the World which took place at Stellenbosch, South Africa.
He said that clearly the LP candidate came third in the election, but the party hierarchy has refused to back down.
He however admitted that the emergence of Peter Obi as a presidential candidate in the last election changed the domineering influence of the two political parties, the PDP and APC.
According to the literary icon, “This recent election – two things happened first of all. One party took over the labour movement, which is not my favorite movement, and then it became a regional party.
“Whereas it was a marvelous breach into the established two camps. Peter Obi achieved something remarkable there, that he broke that mould.
“However, he did not win the election.
I can say categorically that Peter Obi’s party came third not even second and the leadership knew it but they want to do what we call in Yoruba ‘gbajue’, that is force of lies,’’ he said.
