Tension In Enugu Over Tribunal Judgement On Governorship Tussle
By Orji Onyekwere
In about 24 hours, the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Enugu State will among other things, determine whether Peter Mbah was qualified to contest election to the office of the governor of Enugu State, i.e., whether he breached section 182(1) (J) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended by submitting forged certificate to INEC.
The Tribunal will also determine whether Mbah scored majority of valid votes to be returned as Governor of Enugu State.
Mbah’s NYSC certificate forgery saga has been on the front burner of political discourse since it became public, with many analyst and senior lawyers sticking to their guns that Mbah will be sacked by the Tribunal.
The Honourable Justice Akano led panel has been applauded by many Nigerians, especially Enugu citizens for delivering what is considered a sound judgement by dismissing APC’s Petition for non compliance with the Electoral Act which stood the test of appeal up to the Supreme Court.
In the same vein, the people of Enugu expects that the panel will be courageous to uphold the constitution by dispensing justice in the Enugu Governorship Election Petitions.
