Education: UBE Chairman Suspends Two Principals For Collection Of Illegal Fees From Parents

By Rita Elenwo

The Executive Chairman of Universal Basic Education Board in Rivers State, Fynface Akah, has suspended two public school principals over alleged involvement in the collection of illegal charges.

The principals affected are of the Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary section of Community School, Okoro-N’odu in Obio Akpor Local Government Area.

Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt, Akah directed all Head Teachers and Principals who have collected such illegal charges to refund parents immediately or face the same consequences.

Akah noted that UBE schools remain free in Rivers State and the state government is committed to providing a conducive environment for teaching and learning.

Reports have it that this reaction could be connected to the outburst of parents of public school children in Rivers State expressing their frustration over the financial burden they are facing before their children begin new classes this academic session.

Some of them who spoke said they are paying between N20,000 and N30,000 for items such as uniforms and notebooks
