Tragedy Strikes In Lagos As 4 Students Die While Celebrating Success In WASSCE Exams

Mourning has overshadowed joy and excitement, as the police have confirmed that four out of 10 students who went to Elegushi Beach in Lekki, Lagos to celebrate their success in the West African Examination Council School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) examination have drowned in the beach.

According to the management of Elegushi Beach, while confirming the incident in a statement signed by Ayuba Elegushi, the students were said to have defied warning to keep off from a certain section of the beach, as the students did not take to the warning of the beach authority and the security team.

Ayuba says that that the authorities of the beach were able to rescue six of the 10 student after receiving alert that they were drowning.

“The beach authority and security team turned the students back, the boys took a detour and went to an unmanned section of the beach area to swim and unfortunately, about 10 of them were almost drowning before the beach security officers were alerted to the scene and six of them were rescued alive while four were still missing’, the statement read.

While the matter has been reported at the Ilasan Police Station, effort is still on to find the missing boys.”

In an earlier tweet on the incident, Spokesperson of the Lagos Police, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the students had gone to the beach to celebrate after collecting their WAEC results.

“I’ve talked about drowning in relation to water travel and swimming pools. Still, parents/guardians, have a heart-to-heart talk with your teenagers to avoid losing them,” he tweeted.

“Four teenagers drowned at a Lagos beach today, after collecting their exam results in school. Take heed!”
