UCL: Samuel Chukwueze’s late goal seals semi final place for Villarreal

Samuel Chukwueze scored an 88th minute goal, enough to fire Villarreal to the semi finals of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.

European giants Bayern Munich had taken the lead but Chukwueze’s equaliser ensured a 1-1 draw that saw the Spanish club advance on a 2-1 aggregate.

Six-time European champions Bayern had equalled the score of the first leg in Spain last week when Robert Lewandowski drilled in off the post for the lead in the 52nd minute with his 13th goal of the competition this season.

But they failed to find the net again despite intense pressure in the second half and several missed chances.

With just his side’s second shot on target across both legs, Chukwueze levelled on the break in the 88th minute to give Villarreal the lead on aggregate – and earn them an historic victory against the six-time European champions.

It is the first time Villarreal will reach the semifinals in 16 years.

They will face the winner of Liverpool versus Benfica in the last four, a contest Jurgen Klopp’s side currently lead 3-1 on aggregate.
