Impeached Ogun Local Govt Chairman released from Correctional Centre

By Orji Onyekwere

Wale Adedayo, the former Chairman of Ijebu East Local Government Area in Ogun State, has been released from the Ibara Correctional Centre in Abeokuta after spending nearly 48 hours there. His release came after meeting the bail conditions set by Magistrate Adejoke Araba.

Adedayo was brought before Magistrate Adejoke Araba of Magistrate Court 2, Isabo, on Monday in response to a petition filed by the Ogun State Government. The government alleged that Adedayo spread false information about Governor Dapo Abiodun and his administration. Adedayo faced two charges, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The first charge accused Adedayo of unlawfully publishing a letter accusing Governor Dapo Abiodun of diverting local government funds. The second charge stated that he falsely alleged that the Governor misappropriated ten percent of the State’s Internally Generated Revenue meant for local governments since May 2019.

Both charges were cited as offenses under the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
Adedayo had previously been impeached by councillors on charges including financial misappropriation and diverting council funds.
