The Commandant General (CG), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps(NSCDC), Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has directed the budget unit of the Corps to immediately commence the process of registration with the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund(NSITF) as deliberations continue to fine tune other aspects of the registration.
The CG gave the directive while in audience with the General Manager/Regional Manager, Abuja Region of the NSITF who was on a sensitization visit at the Corps’ National Headquarters in Sauka, Abuja.
CG Audi, while expressing concerns as to the funding of the one percent mandatory contribution as contained in the Act of the NSITF, assured that the Corps shall continue to prioritize the welfare of its personnel in compliance with extant laws of the country.
He lauded the mandate of the NSITF stating that it will benefit NSCDC personnel a lot considering the occupational hazard they are exposed to in the course of discharging their statutory responsibilities of protection of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure of the Country, and assured that he will liaise with all relevant agencies to ensure all necessary strategies are put in place for swift implementation.
Speaking earlier, the General Manager/Regional Manager, Abuja Region of the NSITF, Mrs Bridget Ashang explained that the new mandate of the NSITF 2010, takes care of employees while they are still in active service as against only when they are retired especially with regard to work related injuries or diseases otherwise occupational hazard.
As an arm of social security, the law covers all private and public organizations’ employees in the country and all that is required is for an organization to register and pay one percent of its total payroll without deducting from its employees’ entitlements to this pool of funds and we use it to compensate employees who may be exposed to these occupational hazards, Ashang added.
She went ahead to commend the NSCDC for excellent performance in its service to the nation by maintaining stability and making Nigerians feel more safer.
Post script: What is your take on this new initiative from the NSITF for Corp Members, do you see it as a laudable development or another exercise in futility?
