World Charity Day: Abia First Lady Offsets Hospital Bills of Indigents, Supports Petty Traders

As part of activities to commemorate the 2024 International Day of Charity, Wife of Abia State Governor, Mrs Priscilla Otti has paid the hospital bills of some indigent persons at Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia.

She has equally assisted over 50 traders at Orie-Ugba market in Umuahia with cash to improve their businesses.

World Charity Day, celebrated annually on September 5, is a global day dedicated to promoting the importance of charity and encouraging individuals to contribute to various causes.

The 2024 World Charity Day focuses on compassion and action towards empowering individuals and communities through acts of kindness.

Speaking after handing over the proof of payment to the management of Federal Medical Center, Umuahia, the Abia First Lady said the gesture is in line with the agenda of Governor Alex Otti led-administration towards improving the welfare of the people.

Mrs Otti noted that such visits would not be a one-off event as she would make it a regular exercise. She encouraged well meaning individuals to support the less privileged individuals , especially in this times of economic challenges

The Abia Governor’s wife appreciated the dedication of the management and staff of FMC and urged them to continue their service of saving lives.

At Orie-Ugba market, where fifty traders benefitted from cash gifts, Mrs. Otti hinted that the market would be rebuilt to enable them trade in a conducive environment.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs. Blessing Ngozi Felix, explained that the beneficiaries of the hospital bills had since been discharged but could not afford the bills until the intervention of the Governor’s wife.

The Governor’s Wife, who was accompanied by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Vulnerable Groups, Mrs. Ifeoma Thomas also took the same support to traders in Obikabia and Ahiabaubi Modern Daily Markets in Isiala Ngwa North.

Highlights of the day was sharing of launch to indigents and beggars on the streets of Aba and Umuahia, by the office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Vulnerable Group and Poverty Alleviation.
