DG NEMA Highlights Nigeria’s Challenges At Humanitarian Confab In Saudi Arabia

On Saturday October 26, 2024, the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs Zubaida Umar participated in a high-level panel discussion at a Donor Conference focused on supporting displaced people and refugees in the Sahel and Lake Chad region. The conference, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, was organized by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) in collaboration with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), UNOCHA, and UNHCR.

Chaired by Mr. Ted Chaiban from UNICEF, the panel included prominent figures such as Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Advisor to the Royal Court and Supervisor General of KSrelief; Mrs. Joyce Msuya, the Acting UN Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordination; Mr. Rauof Mazou, UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Operations and Mr. Carl Skau, the Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer UN World Food Programme.

In her address, Mrs. Umar outlined the unique challenges faced by Nigeria in responding to displacement crises and highlighted the government’s efforts, supported by international partners. She underscored the importance of community engagement in humanitarian responses, detailing successful strategies that involve local communities in both immediate relief and long-term recovery efforts.

The Conference secured financial commitments to a tune of $1.1billion for the provision of humanitarian assistance and protection for the 33 million needy population across the countries of the Sahel and Lake Chad Region, namely Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Burkina Faso and Mali.
