Remains Of Former Senate President, Joseph Wayas Arrives Calabar

The remains of Dr. Joseph Wayas, a one time President of the Nigerian Senate (1979 – 1983) has arrived Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

His remains arrived at about 18:10 Hours at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport, shortly after the President of the 10th Senate, Godswill Akpabio and his entourage arrived Calabar.

Cross River Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, National Assembly members and several others were on ground to receive the remains of the former lawmaker.

A Night of Songs and Tributes was held at the U.J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar, in honour of the departed politician.

Wayas’ legacy as a statesman and advocate for federalism was echoed in the tributes, with many describing him as a “perfect gentleman” and “grassroots politician.”

Born in 1941 in Basang, Cross River State, Wayas was educated in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with a career spanning public service and politics.

He served as Commissioner for Transport in the former South-Eastern State before his election to the Senate.

As Senate President, Wayas played an instrumental role in legislative activities during the Second Republic and was pivotal in political reforms and constitutional development, including his position as Deputy Chairman of the 1994/1995 National Constitutional Conference Commission.

His death was seen as a significant loss to Nigeria, particularly to his home state of Cross River.
