Arne Slot has hinted that Liverpool are open to strengthening their squad when the January transfer window gets underway
The Liverpool Manager spoke at his Liverpool press conference to preview the trip to Newcastle United. Slot has refused to rule out Liverpool strengthening their squad when the January transfer window opens. Federico Chiesa was the Dutchman’s only signing last summer, but the Italy international has been limited to just three appearances to date because of injury and hasn’t played since September.
The Reds have recently been stung by injuries, with Alisson Becker, Diogo Jota, Kostas Tsimikas, Conor Bradley and Ibrahima Konate all joining the Italian on the sidelines.
Slot pointed out that he expects his walking wounded to be back available to him prior to the January transfer window opening. But admitted that does not stop Liverpool from having conversations about possible business behind the scenes.
The Dutch Coach reiterated his happiness with his current squad, having overseen an impeccable start to his Anfield career with the Reds winning 18 of their 20 matches to date to top both the Premier League and Champions League tables.
But using the £30m signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili as an example, who will officially join the club from Valencia next summer, Slot also suggested that Liverpool will be ready to act if any further opportunities arise when the window opens next month.
“We are having discussions every day, no matter if there is a window coming up or not,” said the Reds head coach, whose side travel to Newcastle United today. “We always talk about the team, which players we like, which players are maybe not in the best place.
“Fortunately we talk more about the ones that do well because almost all of them do really well.
“Yeah, it’s a bit of a worry that three defenders are out at the moment. But the good thing is if the window is open, the defenders are back.
“I’ve said many times at the beginning of the season, I’m so, so happy with the squad we have.
“That’s not to say if there will be a chance in the market, this club has always shown that it will go for it. That’s what we also did with the goalkeeper who is not with us at the moment. We felt it was a chance for us to do it.
“We are mainly focused now on Newcastle and Everton and all these nine games that are coming up.
“But it’s normal we also have conversations about our squad and what can we expect. Can something change? Yes or no? What are the chances in the market?”
