For those who are in tune with history; those who detest Self Glolrification and those who appreciate the real criteria for getting immortalised, Ogbonnaya Onu is far bigger; by name, reputation and accomplishments than Abia State Polytechnic which he founded and which has been renamed in his honour. Beyond the honour bestowed on his Honourable Soul by Governor Alex Otti, he should be immortalised with a bigger honour.
Without prejudice to those who are jokingly catching cruise on social media over the name change and those who are innocently ignorant of who he was, it must be stated that those drenched in sectional bigotry or politically motivated malice to the point of trying to demean and present Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu as ” a nobody” who should never have been honoured, should be pitied and prayed for. Yes, such funny fellows need a slap of deliverance from Odumeje, the Liquid Metal.
No wonder, conmen, rather than accomplished men are a lot of people’s Role Models these days.
Dr. Onu was an Abian until Ebonyi was carved out of Abia, thus could have chosen to build the Polytechnic in his Village if he was half as clannish and selfish as some of those claiming that it was renamed to hurt their section of the state, but he was altruistic, detrabilised and urbane.
Like Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu (Eze Igbo Gburugburu) once said at Aburi Ghana “It is better to separate a bit and live in peace, than to live together and burn to ashes”. The best thing that happened to Ndi Abia in 2023, was to get rid of the PDP and their notorious politics of uncurable hate, toxicity, division and animosity which they used to brainwash and destroy thousands of innocent youths over the years.
By clearing years of accumulated salary arrears owed staff of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic by the PDP that has become a shadow of itself, and by massively supporting the management of the institution to restore the pedigree, reputation and lost glory of the institution, Governor Otti has left no one in doubt that Dr. Onu of blessed and glorious memory deserves to be associated with an institution devoid of mediocrity in all facets.
