Empowering Corps Members to Raise a Worthy Successor Generation
WhatNext Africa, a pioneering college and career readiness solutions provider, has successfully hosted a nationwide sensitization session across all NYSC Orientation Camps for the 2024 Batch C Stream I. This initiative introduced corps members to the What Next After Secondary School Programme, equipping them to mentor and guide secondary school students towards a brighter future.
Addressing the What Next? Challenge
At the heart of the session was the vital question, What Next?, a pressing issue not only for NYSC corps members contemplating their post-service plans but also for millions of secondary school students navigating the transition to adulthood.
“With over 1.8 million SS3 students sitting for final exams annually and only about 1 million gaining admission into tertiary institutions, many young Nigerians face uncertainty about their futures. WhatNext Africa is committed to addressing this gap,” explained WhatNext representatives.
About the What Next After Secondary School Programme : The programme, developed by WhatNext Africa, is designed to prepare students for successful transitions into tertiary education, employment, or entrepreneurship. It includes:
1. WhatNext Conversations: Launching for the2024/2025 school year in January 2025, these weekly, classroom-based career and life planning sessions will resume with the 2nd term after the Christmas/New Year break. The programme integrates career counseling, digital and financial literacy workshops, and the creation of personalized career roadmaps. Students in participating schools will receive WhatNext Conversations Handbooks, comprehensive resources to guide their journey.
2. What Next After Secondary School Summit (WNASSS): The 2025 edition of this interactive annual summit will take place on March 18, 2025, offering students a platform to explore post-secondary opportunities and launch into mentorship programs.
3. WhatNext Mentoring: A seven-year mentorship initiative designed to support school leavers as they transition into young professionals.
Nationwide Collaboration with NYSC
Recognizing the transformative role of corps members, WhatNext Africa has partnered with NYSC to implement the programme nationwide. Corps members, trained as NYSC WhatNext Facilitators, will engage JS3 – SS3 students in their host communities through career conversations and mentoring.
Key implementation highlights include:
Integration into corps members Community Development Service (CDS).
Training via the WhatNext Mentoring platform.
Distribution of WhatNext Conversations Handbooks to all participating students.
Facilitators will benefit from professional development resources, data allowances, and the opportunity to make a lasting impact on their communities.
