In a continued effort to enhance operational efficiency across Nigeria, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has called on commanders at all levels to lead by example and prioritize the welfare and training of their troops. He made this call on Monday, 16 December 2024, while declaring open the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference 2024 at the Army Headquarters Command Officers’ Mess 1, Asokoro, Abuja.
The COAS urged commanders to adopt decisive leadership, demonstrate resilience, and remain unwavering in their commitment to the Nigerian Army’s mission objectives. He emphasized that leading with determination and empathy is vital to motivating troops and addressing the nation’s security challenges effectively.
Reflecting on the Army’s operational performance in 2024, Lieutenant General Oluyede described the year as eventful, particularly in the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and the unlawful killing of innocent citizens. He highlighted the Army’s increased operational tempo and underscored the need to scale up both kinetic and non-kinetic efforts across all theatres to secure peace for all Nigerians.
The COAS expressed gratitude to the executive and legislative branches of government for their support in re-equipping the Nigerian Army and refurbishing critical combat enablers, which have significantly boosted operational success. He reaffirmed his Command Philosophy: “To consolidate the transformation of the Nigerian Army into a well-motivated and combat-ready force capable of discharging its constitutional responsibilities effectively within a joint and multi-agency environment.”
Reiterating the importance of realistic and focused training, Lieutenant General Oluyede stressed his commitment to a “Soldier-First Culture” by enhancing welfare initiatives. These include support schemes for widows and next-of-kin of fallen heroes and personnel with service-related disabilities. He emphasized that prioritizing troops’ physical and mental well-being is essential for sustaining morale, preventing fatigue, and enhancing operational outcomes.
Commending officers and soldiers for their dedication and sacrifices, the COAS encouraged all personnel to strive for even greater accomplishments in 2025.
Lieutenant General Oluyede also expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his strategic leadership and unwavering support for the Nigerian Army. He pledged the Army’s loyalty and commitment to defending Nigeria’s Constitution and government. Additionally, he acknowledged the support of the National Assembly, the Minister of Defence, the Minister of State for Defence, and the Chief of Defence Staff in ensuring that the Army’s funding needs are met.
Earlier, the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Major General Abdulsalami Abubakar, welcomed participants to the conference, describing it as an opportunity to assess the Army’s operations and strategies. He also paid tribute to the late COAS, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, reaffirming the Army’s commitment to upholding his legacy.
As part of its welfare initiatives, the COAS presented Group Life Insurance Cheques to the next of kin of fallen heroes and 12 Hilux vehicles to Army Warrant Officers. The event also showcased the newly produced Vanquisher Light Armoured Vehicle, symbolizing the Army’s continued efforts to strengthen its operational capabilities.
