The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 6 Division, Nigerian Army (NA), Major General Jamal Abdussalam, has praised the efforts of his troops for significantly boosting oil production in the Niger Delta Region (NDR) over the past year. In his farewell address delivered at 63 Brigade in Asaba, Delta State, on 21 January 2025, Major General Abdussalam acknowledged the key role their hard work has played in helping achieve increased oil output in the region.
The GOC expressed his gratitude to the troops, stating that his visit to Asaba was primarily to thank them for their outstanding contributions during his tenure. He encouraged them to maintain their dedication and continue working towards achieving the Federal Government’s target of 2.3 million barrels per day (bpd), which is crucial for the nation’s economic growth.
He noted that reaching this target would positively impact the country’s economy and ensure the prosperity of all Nigerians. Reflecting on the current progress, Major General Abdussalam noted that oil production in the region has risen to around 1.9 to 2 million bpd, a significant improvement.
However, he emphasized the importance of meeting the 2.3 million bpd target to avoid economic challenges, such as relying on borrowing to finance the national budget. He urged the troops to remain focused, disciplined, and professional, underscoring that their work directly supports the nation’s fiscal health. Above all, he called on them to protect the esteemed reputation of the Nigerian Army.
The GOC also reminded the troops that postings within the Nigerian Army are routine and that, as he transitions to his next assignment, he wished them success in their ongoing duties with 6 Division. He urged them to continue prioritizing their personal and operational security and to avoid any involvement in illegal activities in the region. He also requested that they extend the same level of cooperation to the incoming GOC to ensure continued success.
In his remarks, Brigadier General Ugochukwu Unachukwu, Commander of 63 Brigade, expressed deep appreciation to Major General Abdussalam for his exemplary leadership and fatherly guidance. He credited the GOC’s leadership as a significant morale booster and acknowledged the lasting impact of his mentorship on the brigade.
The farewell visit included the commissioning of the Brigade Commander’s official residence and the inauguration of a newly constructed 471-meter dual carriageway connected to a roundabout at the 63 Brigade permanent site, named Lieutenant General TA Lagbaja Drive, located in Ibuzo. The visit concluded with speeches to officers and soldiers, as well as a group photograph.
