LASG Sensitizes Students On Online Safety

In a bid to ensure that students in Lagos State are adequately informed about staying safe online, the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development has organised a one-day sensitization programme on “Digital Resilience: Empowering Students to Navigate Online Safely” for students in Education District I.

In her welcome address at a programme held at the Government Senior College, Agege today, Permanent Secretary, Pharm (Mrs.) Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, represented by the Director, Social Welfare Department, Mrs. Toyin Jaiyeola, said “This programme organised by the School Social Work Services Unit of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development underscores our unwavering commitment to the welfare and wellbeing of the students across Lagos State”.

“The School Social Work Services of the Ministry is designed to support students in navigating social, emotional and psychological challenges, including those arising from internet use. Through counselling, intervention programmes, and partnerships with schools, we ensure that students are equipped with the skills to handle online risks, report abuse and build digital resilience”, Oke-Osanyintolu added.

According to her, the Ministry’s commitment demonstrated through its School Social Work Services to safeguarding students and ensuring their holistic development in all aspects – academic, emotional, and social – aligns with Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s vision of ensuring no child is left behind in accessing the right education, support systems and protection.

In his remarks, the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District I, Mr. Bashir Adeoye Adebowale commended the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development for the initiative, describing is as “laudable and timely because it will go a long way in helping the students in their online activities.”

The TG/PS, represented by the Director of School Administration, Mrs. Maria Ojo, assured the Ministry of further collaboration towards ensuring the students are equipped with the knowledge and skills required to navigate online safely.

The Facilitators, Mr Olalekan Adeeko, a distinguished Technologist and Mrs. Lebura Olawale, a Data Analyst took the participants drawn from over 20 Schools in Education District I on “Ethical Digital Citizenship: Navigating the Online World Responsibly”.

The duo explained to the participants that they should familiarise themselves with Digital Citizenship, Cybersecurity, Cybercrime and Cyber Bullying, among others in order to be responsible citizens online.
