LSTML Trains Construction Artisans To Enhance Code Compliance

The Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory (LSMTL) has deepened its engagement with Bricklayers, Block Moulders, and other Construction Artisans within the Badagry and Ojo axis of the State, towards enlightening them on adhering to statutory building code regulations and best practices of materials testing.

Speaking at a Stakeholders’ Forum held in Ojo, the General Manager of the Agency, Engr. Olayinka Abdul stressed the importance of adherence to safety standards to prevent structural failures, emphasising the critical role of proper materials testing assessment in ensuring structural integrity.

Engr. Olayinka Abdul, who was represented by the Divisional Director in charge of the Ojo and Badagry axis, Engr. (Mrs.) Lola Olowu, urged artisans to prioritize compliance with regulatory standards, use certified building materials, and seek expert guidance when necessary.

Engr. Abdul noted that the theme of the event, “Fostering Collaboration in Averting Building Disasters Across Lagos Communities,” underscored the devastating impact of building collapses, not just in terms of loss of lives and property, but also the long-term economic and psychological toll on the affected communities.

“Our city, Lagos, is a bustling hub of commerce, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that all buildings are constructed and maintained to the highest safety standards,” she added.

The General Manager, who highlighted recent cases of building collapses that have caused loss of lives and property, particularly in areas experiencing rapid urbanization without proper safety measures, called on all stakeholders to comply with extant building codes, standards, and safety regulations to prevent future tragedies.

To reinforce the Government’s commitment to safety, she noted that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration prioritizes regular training and stakeholders’ engagement on new trends and best practices. According to her, the Block Moulders and Bricklayers have been trained on the role of building strategies in ensuring product quality and safety; Compliance with extant building codes and regulations, as well as How to access technical support services for small-scale artisan businesses.

The General Manager urged all stakeholders to actively participate in ensuring safer buildings across Lagos, stressing that change begins with collective action.

The President of the Block Moulders Association covering the Ojo and Badagry axis, Mr. Fabiyi Oyeleke, acknowledged the resources being committed to capacity development for artisans by the government but lamented the rate at which construction jobs are being awarded to artisans from neighbouring countries based on cheap labour.

He urged the state government to take action on this issue, adding that beyond the training being given to the artisans, the government should also demonstrate a commitment to promoting local artisans by leading by example.

The Chairman of the Lagos State Bricklayers Association, Ojo/Badagry Branch, Mr. Adeniyi Olalekan noted that the rising cost of building materials has forced many Nigerians to compromise on quality and opt for cheaper materials, which, in the long run, pose significant risks.

“With the cooperation of all involved parties, we can significantly improve building safety in our state. Together, we can ensure that Lagos remains a thriving metropolis where the well-being of residents is a top priority,” she admonished.

The Stakeholders’ Forum featured training sessions facilitated by Engr. Ramon Ope, Director of Enforcement at LSMTL and Engr. Abimbola Adebayo, Director of the Soil & Geotechnics Unit of the Agency.

In his presentation, Engr. Ope implored various building artisans to work together as associations, rather than seeking individual benefits, which would promote the needed unity and cooperation in fostering their professional development.

On his part, Engr. Adebayo, who trained the artisans on “The Role of Building Testing in Ensuring Product Quality and Safety” emphasised the importance of strong collaborations between manufacturers, end users, and material testing laboratories to ensure adequate testing and accurate results that guarantee quality standards.
