The English Premier League has witnessed another managerial casualty with the sacking of erstwhile Tottenham Hotspur manager, Nuno Espírito Santo.
Nuno was sacked along with his coaching staff Ian Cathro, Rui Barbosa and Antonio Dias.
The sacking of the Portuguese manager was announced barely 48 hours after losing 3-0 at home against Manchester United in the Premier League.
With Saturday’s defeat, Nuno is the only Tottenham manager (excluding caretakers) to lose as many as half of his Premier League games in charge of the club.
In an official statement on its website, Spurs management said they were aware of the efforts of the Portuguese manager and his crew but with results not going as expected, the club was left with the hard decision of relieving the coach of his duties.
Fabio Paratici, Managing Director, Football, said: “I know how much Nuno and his coaching staff wanted to succeed and I regret that we have had to take this decision.
“Nuno is a true gentleman and will always be welcome here. We should like to thank him and his coaching staff and wish them well for the future.”
The former Wolves boss was way down the list of potential candidates to land the Spurs job when Jose Mourinho was sacked by the club.
He however emerged as the surprise pick amidst a host of coaches including Julian Naglesmann, Brendan Rodgers, Erik ten Hag, Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca and Rino Gattuso.
Now back in a similar scenario, Tottenham will now turn their energy to identifying a replacement for Nuno, with Porto boss Sergio Conceicao said to be top on the wish list.
Ryan Mason could come in for a second stint as caretaker boss after stepping into the breach when Mourinho was sacked last season.
This is the second sacking in the Premier League this season following Watford’s firing of Xisco Munoz in October after less than 10 months in charge, with the club.
