I’m Going To Remove Fuel Subsidy But Will Make Sure People See What It’s Being Used For – Peter Obi

Presidential Candidate of Labour Party, Dr. Peter Obi has disclosed that he would remove fuel subsidy when he becomes president of Nigeria.

Obi made this statement while featuring on the Wednesday edition of Arise TV Morning Show.

According to the former governor of Anambra state, subsidy has been a scam used by the government to defraud the people. He disclosed that Nigeria spends about 40billion dollars on subsidy whereas, education and health sector receive less than 20billion dollars per year.

He explained that the critical sector of development which is education and health sector has been neglected for subsidy which is consumption.

Obi noted that there is no country that develops by neglecting its critical sector of development. He said the only way to get Nigeria out of this current economic mess is to remove subsidy and engage in a more productive venture.

However, critical thinking and analysis must be done before removing the subsidy. People must be carried along and stakeholders must be critically engaged before such is done.

The Labour presidential candidate stated that he would talk to the Nigeria Labour Congress and make them see reason that fuel subsidy is not sustainable at this time in Nigeria.

Obi who alleged that Nigerian government has not been transparent with the issue of subsidies over the years maintained that he would not be surprised if how much they claimed to be paying is far less than what they actually pay for subsidy.

He also said he would not be caught unaware if the money only goes to the pocket of a few number of people in government who only put forward their allies to cover up for them.

Obi noted that fuel subsidy has been the major bane of Nigeria and it can no longer be sustainable. It has to be removed.

However, the money has to be judiciously utilized. People must see what it is being used for and must have a direct impact on them. The removal will be transparent and all stakeholders will be involved.

Peter Obi disclosed this on Wednesday while appearing as a special guest on Arise TV Morning Show.
