Terrorists attack Niger hospital, kill 2, abduct many health workers
An attack by terrorists on Tuesday on the Abdulsalami Abubakar General Hospital in Gulu, Lapai LGA of Niger state, has left at least two dead and some health workers abducted.
The gunmen reportedly invaded the hospital around 2am on Tuesday.
A resident of Gulu community who spoke on the condition of anonymity told TheCable that the doctor, nurse and pharmacist on duty were kidnapped alongside at least at 17 victims.
The source said one of the persons killed by the gunmen is a retired health worker.
“They attacked Abdulsalami Abubakar General Hospital, Gulu around midnight by 2am. Two people were killed, in fact, one of them was even slaughtered,” the resident said.
“The doctor, nurse, pharmacist, and about 17 others were carried away by bandits. There was no destruction on the hospital facility.
“The man who was slaughtered, they also went along with about two or three of his children. His residential apartment is adjacent to the hospital. He is a retired doctor.”
When TheCable reached out to the Niger police command, Wasiu Abiodun, the spokesperson, said the commissioner is currently heading to the scene, adding that a statement will soon be released with details of the incident.
Niger is one of the northern states heavily hit by insurgency.
In August, three persons were killed and many kidnapped following an attack by gunmen in Lanta and Makuna villages in Erena, Shiroro LGA of the state.
In July, gunmen reportedly kidnapped 50 residents in an attack on Kuchi village in Munya LGA of the state.
