What They Told Me When I Visited Ekiti For The First Time And Noticed Poverty In The Land- Lagos Commissioner
The Lagos state Commissioner for Budgeting and Economic Planning, Samuel Egube has explained why infectious poverty is ravaging some parts of the country and why the affected people see it as a normal way of life.
RovingNaija News reports that Egube was one of the keynote speakers at the Economic Conference held on Saturday at Dominion Sanctuary, Acme, Ogba in Lagos.
He lamemted how Nigerians regularly come across opportunities but refused to take them because they lack the ability to recognize them.
Speaking on the topic entitled: “Resilience For Opportunities In Lagos”, the state government functionary recounted what he was told when he visited Ekiti State and noticed poverty ravaging the land.
According to him, he was in Ekiti for a short visit some years back and when he needed to buy something with cash, he realized that his hosts were dipping hands in their pockets without bringing out money to rescue the situation.
Asking them why they could not bring out cash and reason everyone in the state seems to have that nature, they told him Ekiti is purely a civil servants state and nobody spends money recklessly in the state.
In his response, Sam Egube asked if there are billionaires in the state. They told him there are billionaires, but they don’t spend their money anyhow.
The Commissioner told them there will always be poverty in the state as long as the rich men among them refused to tap into the arrays of opportunities that abound in the state that will enable a proper circulation of wealth.
The member of Lagos State executive advised the gathering to tap into the myriad of opportunities provided by the state government.
Some of the opportunities identified include the blue rail line, Lag ride, and others.
