The Defence Headquarters has decided to investigate the allegation that troops of Operation Lafiya Dole are of the habit of extorting money from motorists at check points on major roads in Borno state.
This is on heels of an allegation leveled on the army by governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state.
Governor Zulum had on Monday alleged that security personnel including soldiers were seen collecting money from travelers on major roads in the state thereby hindering their duties.
The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Major General John Enenche, in a statement on Tuesday, said the Armed Forces of Nigeria have internal mechanisms to check erring personnel and sanction them appropriately.
He said such reported cases of extortion from the public had always been looked into and given necessary attention.
He however frowned at what he described as “the media or open air accusation” aime tagging Nigerian army personnel as corrupt.
He said all personnel of the armed forces are patriotic as they focus on their call of duty.
He said, “The High Command of the Nigerian Military hereby re-states the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other Security Agencies to tackling and ending terrorism in the North East.”
