President Tinubu Confers GCON Honour On Akpabio, Kekere-Ekun

In a symbolic gesture during Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations, President Bola Tinubu has bestowed the prestigious honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Chief Justice of the Federation, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.

The announcement was made during the President’s address to the nation as part of the celebrations marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary.

The GCON title is one of the highest national honours, recognizing individuals for their outstanding service and contributions to the nation.

By awarding this honour to two of Nigeria’s key leaders, Tinubu acknowledged their dedication and pivotal roles in the country’s governance and judiciary.

His words: “The Senate President and the Chief Justice of the Federation have been conferred with the honour of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).”

He also announced that the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass have the honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR).

Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House was awarded Commander of the Order of Niger (CON) as part of the national honours awards.

For Senator Akpabio, the award of the GCON is a fitting reward for his years of public service to Nigeria having served as Governor of Akwa Ibom State (2007 to 2015) Senate Minority Leader (2015 to 2018) Minister of Niger Delta Affairs (2019 to 2022) and President of the Senate from June 13, 2023 till date.

He was bestowed the award of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in 2011 by the administration of Dr Goodluck Jonathan.
