House of Reps. Commends NEMA For Its Critical Role In Disaster Management

The House of Representatives Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations has paid an oversight visit to the headquarters of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Abuja.

Vice Chairman of the Committee Hon Anozie Nwadike who led members on the visit underscore the critical roles of NEMA in disaster management and said they were at the Agency to confirm it’s safety consciousness at work place.

He emphasized the importance of having a Health Safety and Environment (HSE) department or unit to handle safety matters especially for staff other than the public in line with occupational health and safety regulations.

The committee, after assessing safety measures put in place by NEMA commended the Agency and said it would formally communicate the result in due time.

Earlier, the Director General NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar said the Agency has diligently implemented various initiatives to enhance safety and security within the organization including establishment of of comprehensive infrastructure at the headquarters and field offices, providing Occupational Safety and Health training for staff and service providers and conducting regular emergency evacuation drills to ensure with workplace safety regulations.

She further said that the Agency has played a pivotal role in shaping the formulation of national safety policy documents including contributing to the development of National Workplace Emergency Preparedness and Response Guide, National Chemical and Biological Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan, National Crisis Management Doctrine and National Bio safety Policy and Action Plan.
