Lagos State Government has urged members of Community Development Associations (CDA) and members of the Community Development Advisory Council (CDC) to safeguard government projects in their communities by taking ownership of these projects.
Special Adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Rural Development, Dr. Nurudeen Agbaje, gave the charge in his keynote address delivered at a leadership training held at the Secretariat, Alausa, in Ikeja.
He disclosed that in the last six years, the administration of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has continued to affirm the pivotal role that community engagement plays in fostering sustainable development initiatives, as well as ensuring that projects align with the needs and aspirations of communities while promoting the preservation of these projects.
Dr. Agbaje stressed that the training would focus on the important role community leaders play in cascading the Government’s policies and re-evaluate ways the Government can improve community engagement in a way that would benefit the Government and Communities, adding that the training would meet strategic and critical needs of equipping Community Leaders with tools for strategic partnership and community development, while also helping them realise their place in the T.H.E.M.E.S. Plus Agenda of the present administration.
The Special Adviser assured that the State Government is poised to continue to empower local voices by providing opportunities for capacity building, education, and leadership development, thereby enabling community members to participate meaningfully in decision-making processes and take ownership of sustainability initiatives.
Similarly, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Mrs. Kikelomo Bolarinwa, earlier in her welcome address, stated that the training is one of Mr. Governor’s efforts in re-affirming the importance that the State Government accords Communities, and help to spread the word about the policies and programmes of this administration.
While urging participants to be attentive to the training sessions, she reiterated the commitment of the State Governmrnt to community engagement and amplifying the voices of the people, which would also help the Government identify needed interventions in communities and how to embark on such project.
