Unpaid wages crisis rock Super Eagles ahead double friendly

Fresh revelations made by the BBC shows that the Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has not been paid for six months while some of his backroom staff; especially the goalkeeper trainer Alloy Agu is being owed a backlog of 17 months salary.

This sad situation makes one to wonder how the Nigeria Football Federation expects those handling the national team to be upright in their dealings if what is due to them in salaries is not paid.

According to the BBC report, the NFF is blaming their inability to meet their financial obligations to players and coaches on the rippling effect of COVID-19.

“The financial problems during this pandemic has affected our sponsors hence their inability to pay,” the BBC quoted an official as saying on the condition of anonymity.

“Most importantly the NFF has commenced an intervention to pay the coaches directly before the friendly matches.

“Sadly, we are also waiting for fund from the government to enable us pay the outstanding allowances and bonuses the players are expecting.

“It’s unacceptable for people to be owed and embarrassing to owe them as a body.”

Whatever the case might have been, it is highly irresponsible for the NFF to be failing woefully in its financial obligations and there might even be the need to check their books maybe they have actually been mismanaging the funds that have been coming their way even before the outbreak of the pandemic.

Amidst the cries of unpaid wages, the Super Eagles are set for friendly matches against Cameroon and Mexico in June and July respectively.
