Community Shield: Iheanacho shoots Leicester City to victory over Man City

Kelechi Iheanacho has continued from where he stopped last season as he scored the only goal on Saturday in the Community Shield tie against Manchester City at the Wembley stadium.

Iheanacho who came in as a second half substitute for the Foxes won a penalty kick in the 87th minute and dusted himself to convert it afterwards as Leicester City battled to a 1-0 win over Pep Guardiola’s men.

Nathaniel Ake’s challenge on the Nigerian striker proved to be the deciding moment as Brendan Rodger’s men marched into the new season on a high.

As widely expected, it was Man City who dominated much of the early proceedings, but Leicester were extremely dangerous on the counter-attack.

Kasper Schmeichel was called to action on a number of occasions and he did not disappoint.

He made an outstanding save from an Ilkay Gundogan free-kick early on, before City ‘keeper Zack Steffen matched it by denying Jamie Vardy from point-blank range in the latter stages of the first-half.

City continued to dominate as they made a furry of changes and even brought in their new signing Jack Grealish on the field.

Unfortunately, Ake’s mis-control allowed Iheanacho to steal the ball away from him inside City’s box, and while the eventual shot was missed, the referee awarded a penalty, which was coolly slotted home by the former Man City striker.

That goal by Iheanacho ensured Leicester won the Community Shield for just the second time in their history.
