SSS finally releases eight of Sunday Igboho’s aides

The State Security Service (SSS) has finally released eight of the 12 aides to Yoruba nation secessionist agitator, Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Igboho.

The release of the aides who had long been granted bail by the court was done on Monday.

SSS operatives had arrested all the 12 aides at the Ibadan, Oyo State home of Mr Adeyemo on July 1 after a high-powered raid.

But after the detainees were granted bail by the Federal High Court in Abuja on August 4, the agency had adamantly continued to detain them

The release of eight of the 12 detainees on Monday comes barely after the expiration of the 48 hours ultimatum issued by their lawyer to the SSS director-general, Yusuf Bichi, to release them or risk being jailed for contempt.

“Such blatant disregard for, and contemptuous, spiteful and insolent disrespect for an order of court if allowed to fester would undermine the very integrity of the court,” said Pelumi Olajengbesi, the detainees’ lawyer, on Friday.

The SSS has not offered any explanation for releasing only eight out of the 12 detainees who have all met their bail conditions.

It will be recalled that the agency had filed an application for the Federal High Court in Abuja to reverse the bail granted four of the detainees.

It, however, later withdrew the application, saying it would pursue its objection to the bail granted to the four persons at the Court of Appeal.

They have been in DSS custody for 61 days despite being granted bail by a court on August 4th, 2021.

The names of those released to their lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi are;

  1. Abdullateef Onaolapo,
  2. Tajudeen Irinloye,
  3. Dikeola Ademola,
  4. Ayobami Donald,
  5. Uthman Adelabu,
  6. Olakunle Oluwapelumi,
  7. Raji Kazeem
  8. Taiwo Tajudeen

Meanwhile, the four others still being held in detention are;

  1. Amudat Babatunde
  2. Abideen Shittu
  3. Jamiu Oyetunji
  4. Bamidele Sunday.

The secret police claims that the four of them were actively involved in Igboho’s criminal activities.
