Nigeria 2-0 Liberia: Iheanacho shoots Super Eagles to victory over Lone Stars

Kelechi Iheanacho’s first-half brace against Liberia at the Teslim Balogun has given the Super Eagles a winning start in the 2022 World Cup qualifying series.

Coach Gernot Rohr’s men have stormed to the top of Group C of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers with Friday’s win at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

The opening goal by Iheanacho came in the 22nd minute when he drilled a low shot from outside the box which somehow sneaked beyond the young Liberia goalkeeper.

Senior man as he is fondly called doubled the home team’s lead in the 45th minute with a cool finish as he controlled a high ball right inside the six-yard box, before he turned sharply to fire past goalkeeper Ashley Williams.

The Eagles created several other chances, but Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo, who was picked ahead of Oghenekaro Etebo, and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen failed to put any away.

After Friday’s match, the players from the United Kingdom will fly back to base, with the rest travelling to the island of Mindelo on Sunday night for Tuesday’s clash with the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde in a Day 2 encounter.

Super Eagles Starting XI vs Liberia (1-4-2-3-1)
