LASPA clarifies report of parking space charges

The Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) has clarified a report that claimed that residents of the state will now pay for car park at work and even home.

This was allegedly contained in a notice issued to Nellies Supermarket which went viral on social media.

LASPA stated that the Authority would like to set the records straight in other to forestall future misleading of the General Public, explaining that the business was served a ‘Demand Notice’ for parking slots identified on the setback outside the fence of the Supermarket.

“The Demand Notice issued, clearly stated Parking on Setback, which obviously cannot fall “within” your premises as was wrongly claimed in the Post, but outside the perimeter fencing of the compound, the supermarket is located. All setbacks of private and public buildings remain the State Government property for public use as needed.

“Our staff that served the Notice requested for any Government Permit/Licence issued to you for the use of the setback for Commercial purpose in order to further assist the Authority in the area of database update but your staff could not avail any document.

“It is further imperative to mention that, as erroneously claimed by you in your apology post, the General Manager (Mrs Adebisi Adelabu) visited the premises. This is a false statement, as the General Manager never visited your supermarket, nor did she engage your staff for confirmation of events that occurred on your premises at any point in time.

“The Staff of the Authority present at your supermarket for investigation and verification of events where the Head of Operation Department and Head of Monitoring and Enforcement Department. They were equipped with body cams as it is in our character as a 21st-century technological savvy institution set up for accountability and security consciousness to be diligent and competent in her service delivery.

“It is pertinent that you are informed that the Lagos State Parking Authority was established by statute which is the Laws of Lagos State, 2015 and the establishment of the Authority in the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018 with functions and powers to regulate and manage all forms of Parking (Public and Private), Commercial and Non Commercial within Lagos State and as such the actions of her staff is within the ambit of what the Authority was established for.

“It is therefore of immense importance that you retract your Erroneous and Misleading Post and tender a proper and unreserved apology to the Authority and the General Public as your allegations are Malicious, a Fallacy and an attempt to put the State Government to Disrepute. LASPA will continue to carry out her responsibilities in the manner best suitable to make lives better for the resident of Lagos State.”
