State Of Emergency: Governor Obiano Replies Malami

Fresh from a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Thursday, Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano has condemned in strong terms the statement credited to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, about the impending declaration of a state of emergency in Anambra state.

In his chat with media after the audience with President Buhari, Governor Obiano described the comments by Attorney Malami as “very unfortunate.

Obiano told the media that he has reported the threat by the Minister to President Buhari who distanced himself from the position of Malami.

The Governor subsequently promised to personally call Malami to address the controversial statement.

“I will call him to express reservation about such comments.

“Because less than fifteen persons were killed in two weeks in Anambra you are talking about state of emergency and nothing has been done to the daily killings in the Northern parts of the country,” he said.

He told journalists that the statement by Malami is not unconnected with the forthcoming election in Anambra state which the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is hell bent on winning.

“Don’t forget that he is on the campaign train for the APC candidate in the forthcoming elections in Anambra.

“If this is part of the campaign strategy, they have failed. Anambra belongs to APGA,” he said.

He expressed confidence that President Buhari harbours no ulterior motives concerning the forthcoming gubernatorial election in his state.

“The president is firm that he wants a peaceful election, a free and fair election in Anambra.

“The president also told me that he is not in support of what Abubakar Malami said.

“Malami has confirmed the worst fears of the Nigerian people,” he said
