Carabao Cup: Mikel, Iwobi crash out in quarter-final

The Nigerian duo of John Mikel Obi and Alex Iwobi have both crashed out of the League Cup presently referred to as the Carabao Cup.

While Mikel was conspicuously missing as Stoke City lost 3-1 to Tottenham Hotspur, Iwobi could not save the Toffees despite playing for 90 minutes against Manchester United.

It was the Red Devils that progressed into the semi final with a 2-0 win thanks to late goals from Edison Cavani and Anthony Martial.

With Wednesday’s result, the roster of teams for the semi final is now complete.

Manchester City – who have won the last three editions of the competition – were 4-1 victors against Arsenal.

On their part, Newcastle were eliminated by Championship side Brentford with a 1-0 loss.

Odion Ighalo with Manchester United is the only recognizable Nigerian still left in the race for the not too fancied League Club.

With the curtains set to drop on his loan career, Ighalo is not even a sure bet to win the League Cup with United even if the team goes all the way.
