Real reason why Adamu was replaced as Police IG

Contrary to media speculations, the Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi, has revealed that the tenure of the outgoing Inspector General of Police, Muhammad Adamu was cut short due to the completion of the selection process for a new IG of the Force.

Dingyadi made this known on Tuesday in Abuja at the back of media speculations that the tenure of the former IG was abruptly ended because of the increase in the activities of criminals in the country of late.

It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had on 4 February, extended the tenure of IG Adamu by three months, a move that surprised many who taught he should have been allowed to go with the other service chiefs.

It thus came as a surprise that Adamu was not allowed to complete the three-months extension as his termination came barely less than a month to his official retirement from the Force as the President announced a new IG in the person of a former DIG, Usman Baba. who resumed with immediate effect on Tuesday.

According to the minister, the President Muhammadu Buhari chose not to allow the outgoing I-G complete the three months extension because a replacement was found through an exhaustive process that involved the assessment of qualified senior police officers from the ranks of AIGs to DIGs.

He said all the shortlisted candidates were police officers, eligible for appointment as I-G, in line with Section 7, Sub-section 2 of the Nigeria Police Act (2020).

He also explained that the tenure of the I-G Mohammed Adamu, which ended on February 1, 2021, was extended by the president to enable a detailed process of appointing a new I-G, in line with Section 15 (A) of the 1999 Constitution.
