Super Eagles Suffer Heavy Defeat Against Mexico

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were handed a 4-0 defeat by Mexico in an international friendly played early Sunday morning in Los Angeles, United States.

A shaky start by the Nigeria team with NPFL players running the show saw the Super Eagles concerning two quickfire goals in the first half and two more in the second half; thus going down to one of the heaviest defeats in recent times.

Nigeria’s last win in a friendly match was in March 2019 when they beat Egypt 1-0 with a first-minute goal by Paul Onuachu.

Mexico captain Hector Hererra set the tone of the day as he gave his side the lead after poking in from their first corner kick barely two minutes into the game.

While the Super Eagles were yet to catch their breath after the early goal conceded, the fast-paced Mexicans came calling again; cutting wide open the Nigeria defence before Rogelio Funes Mori blasted home from close range to make it 2-0 for Mexico.

Though the fast tempo of the Mexicans were slowed down by the Eagles, the CONCACAF giants dominated virtually in all departments of the game.

In the second half, Mexico continued from where they stopped but the Super Eagles keeper, Nwabili was able to make some saves that kept Nigeria in the game.

However, with the sustained pressure from the Mexicans, the Super Eagles finally caved in for a third goal when Captain Herrera scored off a rebound after Nwabili spilt a save into the path of the onrushing midfielder.

Mexico made a flurry of changes to their team in the second half and it was one of the new entrants Johnathan Dos Santos that sealed the win with his goal in the 78th minute.

This is Mexico’s second win over Nigeria in six meetings and this definitely is the biggest.
