Updated: Jorginho seals late win for Chelsea In EPL Clash
Though it was far from a commanding performance, Chelsea did just enough to secure all three points on Saturday in their Premier League clash at home to Leeds United.
A late Jorginho penalty kick in stoppage time ensured that the Blues prevailed 3-2 over the hard fighting Leeds United team on Saturday at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea started well. Pushing the famously high-pressing Leeds back into their final third. Illan Meslier made a couple of saves with his feet, foiling Timo Werner and Mason Mount.Reece James attempted a cheeky Free-kick on seven minutes, but while it could have fooled Meslier, it wasn’t accurate enough and inched past his right post.
A Raphinha left-footer on 15 minutes from the edge of the Chelsea looked like it as going wide, but James made sure, hacking it away for a corner.
Raphinha tried an audacious free-kick of his own on 20 minutes – this time the ball was on target, and Mendy did well to tip it away from the top left hand corner of his net.
Leeds were awarded a penalty on 28 minutes when Alonso was late in a challenge on Daniel James and referee Chris Kavanagh rightly awarded a spot kick. VAR confirmed the decision.
Up stepped Raphinha who cooly slotted home past Mendy.
Against the run of play, the Blues equalised with four minutes from the break. Alonso won the ball on the left off Stuart Dallas, raced to the byline, and cut the ball back to in-running Mason Mount, who sweep the ball into the net from the six-yard box with his left boot.
Meslier thwarted Havertz deep into added time, kicking away the ball away for a corner when put though.
There were no changes by either side at half-time.
Chelsea got a deserved penalty on 56 minutes when Raphinha challenged Toni Rudiger on the byline.
But Renee Kavanagh had originally given a corner. VAR intervened, Kavanagh was sent to check the side monitor, and rightly overturned his clear and obvious mistake.
Jorginho comfortably pit the spot kick away.
Chelsea coach Th/o as Tuchel opted to bring on defender Andrea Christensen and wide man Callum Hudson-Odoi, in order to shore up the defensive side of their game.
But the reverse reverse occurred and Leeds stared to dominate possession and attacks. And it was no surprise that tenBlues conceded their eight goal in three games, to allow Leeds an equaliser with seven minutes left on the clock.
A fine break on the left saw the ball arrowed across the chelsea six yard box and substitute Joe Gelhardt was on the spot to steer the ball home past Mendy.
Romelu Lukaku was brought on for Alonso three minutes later as Tuchel went for the win.
As the clock ticked over into added time, substitute Mateus Kitchen upended Rudiger in his penalty area.
VAR had a look but it as an easy decision to confirm.
Jorginho too the spit kick and sent Meslier the wrong way to put the Blues 3-2 up in the 94th minute.
