Fayemi Gives Reason Nigeria Doesn’t Operate State Police & Why Buhari Shouldn’t Be Held Responsible
The myriad of security challenges confronting the nation has obviously fueled the fire of agitation for state police across the country.
Many Nigerians believe that the current worsening insecurity is as a result of lack of state policing that will tackle the challenge from the root.
Speaking on the subject while featuring as a special guest on the Monday edition of Arise TV Morning Show, the Ekiti state governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi gave a detailed analysis of why Nigeria does not operate state police and the reason president Muhammadu Buhari should not be held accountable for it.
According to the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, State Police is not a security project any governor can embark upon just like that. It is in the exclusive list of the constitution and there is nothing any governor can do about it.
Fayemi who spoke from Ado Ekiti explained that federal government is the only one that has the sole authority to control and operate the Nigeria police Force. The order comes from Abuja and that is the reason the States Governors have limited power over them.
State governors cannot deploy or redeploy them. They can only encourage them by way of incentivising them. The power to control police is strictly in the exclusive list of the federal government and it is not something the state governors can meddle in.
Also speaking on why President Muhammadu Buhari should not be held responsible for not being able to create state police, Governor Fayemi revealed that it is only the National Assembly that can review the provision in the constitution.
If the lawmakers are not interested in the bill or move a motion that will review the constitutional provision of state police, there is nothing the president can do about it.
If the bill is debated and amended at the National Assembly and the state police law is passed, President Buhari will be willing to sign it. But as at now, there is nothing like that on ground.
Fayemi explained this on Arise TV Morning Show.
