#ENDSARS: Ben Hundeyin Explains Why They Used Tear Gas On The Memorial Protesters
Nigerian youths have trooped out en masse on the streets of Lagos for the Endsars memorial rally, in a bid to remember the victims of Police brutality and those who died as a result of the extra-judicial killing from the Nigerian Army, on the 10th of October 2020.
However, in the course of their peaceful rally the police dispersed the protesters using tear gas and in an attempt to defend the actions of the Nigerian Police, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin alleged that some of the protesters decided to be lawless and start mounting the toll complex, which according to him, is an action threatening the existing law and order in the area, hence the use of tear gas to disperse them.
He noted that the police did not use batons, nor was there physical contact.
Benjamin Hundeyin in his exact words said, “Peaceful persons were allowed to move around without interference from the police. Some of them that decided to be lawless and mount the toll gate complex, an action threatening the existing law and order in the area, were dispersed with teargas.
“There was no use of baton, neither was there physical contact. We equally do not have any record of shooting”.
