Gunmen Kill Police Sergeant In Cross River

Gunmen on Saturday, killed a police officer identified as Peter Ikwen in Calabar, Cross River State, South-south Nigeria.

The slain officer, a sergeant was shot dead at Edgerton Street, Calabar and the incident was confirmed by the police spokesperson in the state, Irene Ugbo.

She said, “I have just gathered that a police sergeant was shot dead by unknown gunmen in the early hours of Saturday,” she said.

Ms Irene, a superintendent of police, said the gunmen stole Mr Ikwen’s service rifle, after killing him. She condemned the officer’s killing, adding that the incident was being investigated, as there have been such cases of violence on the police in Cross River State in the past.

Early in the year 2021, precisely in the month of March, 6 police officers were killed in Calabar, the state capital and in less than a week after, 2 officers were killed in Obubra, in the central part of Cross River, while in December 2020, an assistant commissioner of police was also killed.

The slain officer, Egbe Edum, was serving in the northern part of the country and was on his way to visit his family when he was attacked.
