Why There Is A Surge Of New Registration For PVC- INEC Boss Reveals
The rate at which Nigerians are teooping out to register for their Permanent Voters Card ahead of 2023 general elections has been considered quite alarming especially for a country with an extreme voters apathy like Nigeria.
However, the reason behind the latest development has been clarified by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
He made the revelation while speaking at Chatham House in London recently.
According to him, the enthusiasm of young people and the deployment of online registration are behind the surge in the number of newly-registered voters.
While explaining, the INEC boss noted that the online registration has made the process quite easy and encouraging for many Nigerians who usually find it difficult to create time and visit the designated offices for physical appearance.
Similarly, the young people’s interest in the forthcoming elections has led to explosion in the registration for PVC.
Most of the people who were below 18 years of age in 2019 are said to have become of electoral age and are passionate about the move to exercise their franchise this year.
Professor Mahmood stated this and several other reasons there is a surge in the registration for voters card while making a presentation at Chatham House in London.
