SPECIAL REPORT: Four Multinationals Promoting Women On International Women’s Day

On Friday March 8th, the world rose to celebrate the significance of International Women’s Day, a day specially set aside to appreciate the womenfolk and celebrate their economic, social, cultural and political achievements across the globe.  

Since its official recognition by the United Nations in 1977, International Women’s Day has become one of the global events that offers the privilege to spotlight women’s excellence and appreciate their giant strides, impeccable track records and sterling accomplishments in their various field of endeavours.

Like the previous years, the 2024 edition of the event witnessed remarkable identification with the female gender by civil society organizations, governments and multinational companies. They all used the occasion to celebrate women’s commitment to worthy courses and for lightening up the world with their unique qualities.

Just as it is in every other country, so it was in Nigeria as multinational companies leveraged the occasion to connect with their female consumers and employees through various initiatives that further amplify the mood, reward loyalties and re-echoe the uniqueness of the female gender.

Here are some of the brands that celebrated Nigerian women and brought their stories and efforts to life on International Women’s Day:

1. Netflix 

In its own special way of celebrating International Women’s Day, Netflix, a subscription based streaming service presented films and series produced by Nigerian female filmmakers to celebrate their contributions to the creative industry.

According to a statement on the company’s website, the films and series announced for 2024 IWD include Òlòtūré: The Journey’ (series), and ‘Baby Farm’ (series) by Mo Abudu, ‘Postcards’ (series) by Hamisha Daryani Ahuja, who produced the Nollywood/Bollywood film ‘Namaste Wahala,’ ‘House of Ga’a’ (film) by Bolanle Austen-Peters and Joseph Umoibom, and ‘To Kill a Monkey’ (series) by Kemi Adetiba.

Buttressing the rationale behind the decision, Dorothy Ghettuba, Netflix’s Director of Content in Sub-Saharan Africa said: “Female creators have been instrumental in shaping the creative landscape, and Netflix is proud to highlight their extraordinary impact both onscreen and behind the scenes, propelling the industry to new global heights”

2. Infinix

Infinix, a smartphone brand with a visible presence in various countries across the world, seized the occasion to highlight its commitment to gender inclusion and diversity with a hashtag:  “#InspireInclusion.” 

In a statement released on its website on Friday to celebrate International Women’s Day, Infinix reinstated its mission to creating technology that empowers every individual, irrespective of gender. It also salutes its diverse team of women who bring their passion, expertise, and vision to work every day. 

“Our commitment to diversity and inclusion shines through the collective efforts of our talented female professionals, who hold key positions across various departments, from Integrated Marketing Communications and PR to Social Media & Content Development, Marketing, Sales Force Training, Human Resources Management and Customer Service.

“In recognition of the immense potential of women in the business and tech landscapes, we are committed to empowering 20 women by sponsoring them for the WIMBIZ Mentorship Program. This carefully curated mentorship journey is not only designed to catalyse their careers and business ventures but also serves as a critical step towards nurturing a generation of women who are equipped with the power of technology and the support of a community that believes in their boundless potential.” The statement reads in part.

3. Tecno

Tecno, one of the fastest selling mobile phone brands also celebrates women on International Women’s Day. In a press statement posted on its website Friday, the company announced juicy packages as rewards for its female consumers on the special day.

To participate in the contest, Tecno advised only female customers to go to any authorized store and purchase any of their selected devices. 

“TECNO is committed to empowering women and celebrating their achievements. This promotion is a way of saying thank you to all the women who have supported the brand over the years. Women are the backbone of every society, so we are dedicated to providing the best products and services.” The statement partly reads.

4. Diageo

Diageo, a brand of Guinness Nigeria on Friday joined the long list of multinational companies that celebrate women on their International Day.

In a statement released on its website, the company revealed the crucial roles women play in shaping the success of the organization.

It partly reads: “Investing in women unlocks their full potential, leading to innovation, increased productivity, and improved community wellbeing. 

“By prioritising investment in women, we can break down barriers, challenge gender norms, and ultimately build a more equitable society.”
