I’m Not Desperate To Be Nigeria’s President- Peter Obi Explains Reason For Dumping PDP

Former PDP presidential aspirant, Dr Peter Obi has cleared the air on the controversies that trailed his defection from the main opposition party.

Obi announced his intention to dump his presidential aspiration under the platform of PDP on Thursday. On Friday, he announced his defection to Labour Party. The former governor of Anambra state will now seek an election for president in the new party.

Speaking on the Friday edition of Channels TV Politics Today, Obi stated that he is not desperate to be president of Nigeria. 

Explaining the reason for leaving the PDP, he noted that there are certain things that are happening in the party that are beyond what he could handle. 

Obi said his Political philosophy is far from what is being practised in the people’s democratic party and if he should remain there, he may be forced to compromise his standard.

The former governor realized that the presidential ticket may likely be given to the highest bidder and this will not produce the best presidential candidate that Nigerians need.

He said most of the aspirants have mopped up the dollars in circulation and if things should continue in that dimension, it will be detrimental to the country.

Reacting to the statement of Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike who described him as a man with no integrity, Obi said Wike does not really understand the context in which integrity is being used.

Wike, while reacting to Obi’s defection on Politics Today on Thursday said Peter Obi lacks character and integrity to have dumped the party under which he is seeking election to be president a few hours to the primary election.

But in his own view, Obi said Wike misused the word. He said integrity is used in the context of financial and asset management. 

He noted that he is the first governor in Anambra who left office with 500billion naira starched in the state account. He said he was impeached in his first term because he was too honest for politicians to deal with.

Obi explained that he has what it takes to contest presidential election under the Labour Party and win in 2023.
