House of Reps Ad-hoc Committee To Abolish NDE And NEMSA.
House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee investigating Overlapping Functions of Government Agencies has mulled the abolishment of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE).
For the same aim, the committee also suggested the National Electricity Management Agency (NEMSA) should be scrapped.
At a subsequent meeting of the committee, MPs said that the two agencies had fallen short of their goals and had instead incurred significant costs for Nigeria’s taxpayers.
They claim that NDE has failed to stop the soaring unemployment rate among the nation’s thronging youth.
The committee for NEMSA indicated that the organization has not yet addressed the issue of the electricity distribution companies’ poor metering practices in the power sector.
Therefore, for the NDE to explain its existence following the mandate of the investigative panel, the Committee demanded a five-year performance assessment report from it.
Victor Mela Danzaria, the chairman of the House Committee, made the decision following the investigative hearing that also included NELMC and NAPTI.
Some Committee members, including Hon. Adedeji Olajide and Hon. Zacharia Yanpan, criticised the electricity regulatory organization’s operations, claiming that the government could no longer afford to support them.
The agency is draining the blood of Nigerian residents, according to Hon. Olajide, and should be combined with other organizations that carry out related tasks.
The Committee, therefore, requested a five-year performance assessment report from the NDE so that it could justify its existence following the investigating panel’s mission.
Following the investigative hearing, which also included NELMC and NAPTI, Victor Mela Danzaria, the head of the House Committee, made the choice.
Hon. Adeji Olajide and Hon. Zacharia Yanpan, two Committee members, criticized the operations of the agency in charge of regulating power, saying that the government could no longer afford to support them.
According to Hon. Olajide, the agency should be combined with other organizations that carry out related activities since it is sucking the blood of Nigerian citizens.
However, the chairman of the committee, Mela, and another member, Hon. Simon Karu said that the organization was not giving young people jobs.
The move by Karu that NDE submit a five-year performance assessment report on employment generation or be recommended for the merger was therefore approved by the committee.
The organization had a week to submit the report.
In addition, the Committee threatened to allocate nothing in the 2023 Budget to the National Power Training Institute if the problem of power outages was not addressed.
